For this week’s drill, Millwood FD members spent the hot Tuesday night refining their skills on establishing a water source, operating a deck gun, and deploying portable monitors. Members were split up into 2 crews on Engine 247 and Engine 248 and simulated an emergency response. Members on each engine took turns responding to the scene, “hitting the hydrant” or establishing a positive water flow from the hydrant to the engine, setting up the deck gun on the top of the engine and flowing water, and quickly deploying a portable monitor and flowing water.
Deck guns mounted directly above the pump panel on our engines and are used to flow high volumes of water directly from the engine. These are very useful for large exterior fires and are manually controlled by a firefighter behind the deck gun. Portable monitors serve a similar purpose but can be placed throughout the fireground while connected to the engine by a supply hose line.
