Just before 10:30 yesterday morning, Millwood FD was dispatched to a reported motor vehicle accident in the area of Seven Bridges Road and Millwood Road with Chappaqua VAC and Westchester EMS 45Medic1. New Castle PD was first to arrive on scene and updated responding units that the driver had struck a fire hydrant and was experiencing a serious medical emergency. Upon the arrival of the Westchester EMS supervisor and 45Medic1, the patient was removed from the vehicle and life-saving measures were performed.
Millwood FD Car 2251 (Chief Rodrigues) and 2253 (Chief Santone) arrived on scene soon after and confirmed that a fire hydrant had been severely damaged, resulting in substantial water flow from the water main. Upon the arrival of Rescue 36, Engine 248, and Chappaqua VAC 54B1, Millwood FD members split their crews to assist with patient care and traffic control.
Due to the quick actions of personnel on scene, the patient was transported to the hospital in a conscious and alert state. Once the patient was transported, Millwood FD remained on scene to keep the road closed as the New Castle Water Department worked to turn off multiple water mains. The New York State DOT was requested to clear heavy sediment debris from the roadway as a result of the heavy water flow. Millwood FD units remained on scene for an hour before returning to service.
