At our recent monthly meeting, several members were recognized for their recent response to a reported unresponsive patient who was not breathing. Arriving before local EMS agencies, Millwood FD Chief Raguso and First Assistant Chief Rodrigues administered oxygen, used an AED, and initiated CPR. After just a few minutes, the patient was revived.
Skills that many of our members have obtained and refresh on each year have allowed Millwood FD to participate in a Westchester County Department of Emergency Services initiative to have fire departments with several well-trained members respond along with EMS agencies on the most serious medical emergencies – ECHO-level responses. Often times, police or EMS personnel are already on scene and we assist, but sometimes, as was the case in this instance, Millwood FD personnel are first to arrive and minutes, even seconds, can mean the difference between life and death. Police, fire, and EMS agencies all agree that this has been a very beneficial and lifesaving arrangement.
These responses demonstrate that our members not only provide potentially lifesaving services in fires or car accidents, but also by responding to serious medical emergencies throughout our district.
Millwood FD is always looking for members to join our team. Come to our Open House this Sunday at Station 1 (100 Millwood Road) from 1-4pm to learn more about how you can help your neighbors in their time of need. |
