Day in the Life of a Millwood Volunteer |
March 26, 2025 | |
Our members had a busy Tuesday, serving as a great example of a “day in the life” of a Millwood FD volunteer. Starting early in the morning, at 3:45am, Engine 247 was requested to respond mutual aid to Chappaqua FD on a working fire. All 3 Chiefs and Engine 247 responded, with 2 Chiefs remaining in our district to respond to calls as needed. Millwood members worked with Chappaqua FD and Mt. Kisco FD to conduct primary and secondary searches, as well as ventilating the structure. After over an hour on scene, Millwood units returned to service. Later in the morning, at 11:25am, Millwood FD was dispatched to a reported tree and wires down with a smoking transformer on Shinglehouse Road. Millwood members arrived on scene and shut down the road on both ends to keep the scene safe. Members kept the road closed while Con Edison worked to secure the power lines and transformer, and Town of New Castle DPW removed the tree from the roadway. Millwood units remained on scene for an hour and a half before returning to service. For our weekly Tuesday training, Millwood FD members learned how to “stop the bleed”. During this training, members learn techniques to stop active bleeding and how to properly apply tourniquets. This very useful course was led by local EMS instructors, who were assisted by our own FF/EMT Alex Brandoff. Finally, just after midnight this morning, Millwood FD Tanker 15 was requested to respond to Croton-on-Hudson FD's district for reported heavy smoke in the structure. Car 2251, 2253, and Tanker 15 were canceled by Croton-on-Hudson FD command while en route. |
